Surface West of Chinley the tramway is good and the towpath from Bugsworth Basin to Marple aqueduct is generally good condition, though a little narrow in places. East of Chinley the tramway is rougher and the old stone sleeper blocks used to fix the rails are still there, making for a somewhat bumpy ride.
